Kalyway 10.5.2/Win XP Pro OS Installation and Dual Boot Set

The are lots of sites that discuss how to setup a dual boot OS X/MS Windows XP compatible environment. The goal is to get all the information regarding this procedure and create a central location to start, a definitive guide to making your own compatible system that runs with ease using similar hardware.

OSx86 OS Installation & Simple Dual Boot Procedure (Last Update 25.01.2009)

Internal Components:

• Asus P5k-VM (775 Socket \ G33 Or P35 Chipset Motherboard)
• Intel Core2Duo E8400 3.0GHz
• 2×2048MB DDR2 800MHz
• 512MB GeForce 8800GT PCI-E
• 500GB 16MB Cache 7600RPM SATA
• DVD RW+\- SATA
• 802.11G WiFi PCI
• 500W Power Unit

*First thing before doing anything is to double check the OSx86 HCL and check for any special instructions for your particular hardware. The ASUS P5K-VM notes, for example, specify using the Kalyway 10.5.2 installation method.

Software Required:
*Kalyway 10.5.2
*Partition Magic Boot CD
*Windows XP Installation CD
*Chain0 file

OSx86 Kalyway 10.5.2 Guide:

**BIOS Info: From my experience there are no explicit changes needed to make this work with both systems and because XP does not
like AHCI, but OS X will work with IDE, I just left my BIOS set to the default IDE setting in the SATA BIOS options. One change I had
to make was to specify the boot order and have the CD/DVD drive to be before the HDD. Other than that I tried to leave the BIOS alone
in order to not have to change my bios each time I wanted to boot to another OS. If your BIOS is different then try and find the best BIOS
settings that work on both systems to minimize this step for yourself as well.

On to the Operating System Installation…:

1. Install Windows XP
-Complete the normal install startup. Make sure you start off with one entire unallocated space and create a Windows partition for the OS.
My HD is 250Gb so I decided to go with a 60Gb NTFS Windows partition. Leave the rest of the HDD space untouched.
Complete XP installation, make sure XP boots.
-At this point XP will be installed but not updated. You can either finish updating/setting up your Windows environment or continue to
next step. Because the Windows update for a XP will take a long time, I went ahead and did the OS X installation in case something happened that would require the HDD to be erased.
**Give XP volume a name like Windows

2. Hard Drive Setup
Boot using a partition management tool, I used a Partition Magic boot CD but practically any partition management/resizing boot program should work, like GParted.
-Hirens BootCD will also work, it does a lot more than partitioning because it comes with many useful diagnostic programs as well
-Here you need to create a second partition for OS X. Create an unformatted partition.
-Next is create a shared FAT32 storage partition. Create this from the rest of the unallocated space. This partition will be accessible from both OS

3. Install OS X
-Boot up the Kalyway DVD, hit <Enter> when prompted at the Darwin/OSx86 boot screen to boot to the DVD.
-After a few moments and long black screen with white text flashing accross the screen you will be presented with the spacey OS X desktop and a Choose A Language box.

-Before continuing with the installation you must prepare which partition you wish to use.
Go to Finder > Applications>  Utilities > Disk Utility program. Here you should see on the left hand side three hard drives, one labled the volume name you entered for XP and two without. Select the drive that you allocated for OS X and click on the erase tab. Here set the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), give it a volume name and hit erase. This will erase any existing information on this partition and create your new Mac partition. Wait until it completes and then exit from Disk Utility.
-The Installer program should come back up automatically after exiting from the Disk Utility program. Click <Continue>
-Before installing Kalyway click on the <Customize> button
-Choose the Vanilla Kernel, the Nvinject, Broadcom Wireless, Realtek Audio patches if you use the same hardware as my setup.

Update: Double check the Customize area because sometimes the fix for hardware conflicts is to be specific with certain selections, some hardware like Audio require the specific audio patch to be applied or Network and WiFi require patch specification.

4. Setup Dual Boot Menu
-This method is the simplest and easiest for novices. All it requires is a simple modification of the XP boot menu to add the option for your OS X disk and putting the Chain0 file in the root directory.
-Once OS X is installed it becomes the primary OS so to get back to XP you must re-activate it’s partition
-Use your partitioning program to make the XP partition active in order to be able to boot back to Windows and create the dual boot menu.

To create Dual Boot Menu:
Right-click My Computer >Advance Tab > under Startup and Recovery >click Settings > Default Operating System > click EDIT

• at the end insert: c:\chain0=”MAC OS X Tiger”
• it should look like this:

**Between quotes enter the volume name for your OS X installtion
**Make sure you put the “chain0” file in the root C:\ directory!
Conclusion
-Make sure you update the ASUS P5K-VM BIOS once both systems are installed and booting.

-ASUS P5K-VM Audio Fix:
(Update:This is no longer needed, the audio is installed during the initial OS X install. Kalyway disc has a few audio chipset configurations in the customize menu. Check that avenue first during install.)

This was one issue that was a little tricky to sort out, at least finding the proper information on how to fix it:

1. Install ALC882 AppleHDA v.04b package. This is a self installing package to run on the OS X system
2. Download AppleHDA Patcher 1.17, or the most current version
3. Copy the text on this link, alc882 ICH9, and make a text (.txt) file out of it
4. Run the AppleHDA Patcher 1.17 program in OS X and copy/paste the alc882 ICH9 text and hit <Patch>
5. Reboot machine and the sound should now be working

*Update: During the OS customize options selection process, the top Audio group can not be checked solely, rather expand the list to see if  motherboards on board audio is present. The P5K-VM uses the Realtek ALC883 and checking only this one and not the others allows the audio to work patch free, the method listed above is no longer needed. Check out this area because different motherboard component patches needs to be specific to avoide conflicts with other similar applied patches from the install.

-USB Drive Mount Issue: For some reason my machine would not automatically mount any external Hard Drive that I plugged into the USB port. It would be recognized in the Disk Utility program but has no mount path. The fix I figured out for this was to install Paragon NTFS/MAC, once I installed this program my USB drives mounted no problem and I was able to read and write to a NTFS external hard drive.

-CPU Temperature Sensor: Not every temperature sensor functions correctly in this systems enviroment. The only one that I found that works and works well is Temperature Monitor 4.5. I recommend using this program if you plan on overclocking your CPU.

-Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update: Do not use the Apple update program in this system unless you want to reinstall OS X. Use the Combo Update plus the Kernel Update to get around this issue.

-Boot Menu: You may have noticed that when creating the boot menu and selecting the MAC OS X choice that your are then presented with a Darwin boot menu asking you to hit <ENTER> for boot options. In order to get to OS X you must hit <ENTER> and then you will see a list of the partitions setup on the machine. This is why it is critical you give your partition volumes proper names to recognize which is which. From here simply select which is the MAC OS X and hit <ENTER> with no options and OS X should boot and you should see shortly thereafter the gray Apple boot screen. I am still looking into how to modify the Darwin boot so that it boots to the OS X partition automatically. If you do not do this when boot to OS X then the Darwin will exit and bring you back to the XP Boot menu.
